First: Emotions are running high. A hasty decision in any direction is likely to offend some subgroup that is currently angry at some level or another (I saw someone saying that offering Hillary the VP spot would be condescending, and would prevent that person from voting for Obama. Hmmmm....)
Second: There needs to be a good feel for the way that McCain is going to jump prior to making the decision. Your VP candidate needs to compliment your candidate, and offset your opponent's candidate. If you jump right in, McCain can actually gain an edge with a carefully chosen VP candidate, no matter who Obama selects.
